U9 MATCH REPORTS

Sunday 29 January 2012
v Dartfordians and Sidcup

The combined Sheppey and Sittingbourne Under 9’s rugby team had a successful day away at Dartford this Sunday, winning two out of their three matches. The first game against Sidcup B saw SAS storm in with immediate attacking from Joseph Ryan and Ben Kindred. SAS opened the scoring with a fast try from Rhys Bishop. Zach Smith followed on with another almost immediately. The SAS boys kept up a furious pace with good from Edmund Shepherd, George Moorecroft and Rhys Bishop. Adley Keen played an effective part in keeping the opposition at bay. Moorecroft soon found a space in Sidcup’s defence and scored a great try. Oliver Sturrock followed on with another try leaving Sidcup B yet to score. Smith scored another 3 tries in total throughout the duration of the match leaving a final score of 7-0 to a triumphant SAS.

The second game of the day proved to be more challenging against Sidcup A team with an unbroken defensive line from Sidcup that proved difficult to get through. Keen had a pivotal role in pushing SAS through the halfway line to enable SAS a chance to score. Ryan showed fearless tackling as always and had to work hard to prevent Sidcup from taking the lead. Daniel Smyth, Shepherd and worked hard to defend the SAS line and Sidcup B were unable to break through to score. During the second half both teams picked up the pace and Smith managed to break through to score the only try of the game for SAS, storming past the Sidcup defence.

The third and final match of the day was played against Dartfordians who proved to be a very challenging opposition. They started off with fierce tackling that stopped SAS at every opportunity and prevented them from getting near the try line. Keen put in huge effort to push the line back and prevent Dartfordians from scoring but they managed to get one past just before half time. A tired SAS regrouped their efforts and put in some fierce tackles but were thwarted by Dartfordians a second time to give a final score of 2-0 to Dartfordians. The SAS coaches were pleased with the teams efforts and all the boys put in their best efforts.

v Thurrock and Aylesford @ Sittingbourne

Sheppey and Sittingbourne’s combined Under 9’s Rugby team (affectionately known as SAS) got off to a cracking start in 2012 at Sittingbourne playing 3 games against visitors Aylesford and Thurrock. They faced Thurrock A team first and the game getting off to a fast start. SAS’S Ben Kindred showed his all round skills by immediately jumping in to defend the ball and keep SAS in possession. Great pushing from Adley Keen got the ball into range for Zach Smith to start the scoring with a try. Alfie Evans made his mark on the match with good tackling and defending to prevent Thurrock taking the lead. Thurrock pulled one back, only to be beaten to the try line again by Smith to put SAS back in the lead. Thurrock stepped up their attack for the second half scoring again, but this time their attempts to go into the lead were thwarted by ferocious tackling from Joseph Ryan who fought tirelessly throughout the match to keep the visitors at bay. Each team then scored a further try, Thurrock scoring their last in the dying moments of the game. Final score a respectable 3-3 draw.

The second game of the day saw SAS meet Thurrock's B team who proved to be highly motivated opponents. Thurrock B set a fast pace to the game immediately tackling and attacking the SAS defence. They were rewarded with an early try. SAS were forced to up their defence and Rhys Bishop showed his tackling skills alongside Evans and Shepherd to keep Thurrock at bay. Thurrock broke through and scored try number two before half time. The second half saw Thurrock power through for try three, but, when all seemed lost, a stroke of genius saw George Moorecroft sneak through Thurrock's defence to score the only SAS try of the match. Final score 3-1 to Thurrock.

The 3rd and final game was played against Aylesford. A tired but determined SAS started well with lively defending from Oliver Sturrock. Keen, Evans and Collins all helped SAS keep possession of the ball. Smith scored a try for SAS with a fantastic run down the pitch. After a gruelling first half, Smith managed to score again with great passing from Bishop and Kindred. The final try was scored by Aylesford who managed to pull one back, but despite their efforts it wasn’t enough to prevent a jubilant SAS from winning 2-1.

Ryan was again recognised for his fantastic tackling and Smith was recognised for tackle of the match in game two.

@ Folkestone

Zachary Smith was the star of the show for Sittingbourne and Sheppey's U9 side as they beat Canterbury and Folkestone.

Smith's pace carried him to two early tries against Canterbury. After the scores were levelled, Rhys Bishop gave SaS a 3-2 lead and Smith ran in three tries after the restart to make it 6-2.

SaS raced out of the blocks against host club Folkestone, Smith bagging an early brace. Bishop made it 3-0 before half time, and once smith had completed his hat trick, Bishop rubber stamped a 5-0 win.

Dover and Westcombe Park @ Sittingbourne

Sheppey and Sittingbourne (SAS) Under 9 rugby team had a good day at Sittingbourne on Sunday, playing and drawing with both Dover and Westcombe Park.

The 1st game against Dover saw SAS pushing hard from the start to enable them to score. Alfie Collins and Joseph Ryan were crucial to the team with their tackling skills. Rhys Bishop put in a great effort to hold Dover back, but despite this they managed to score a try. SAS responded with a great try from Joseph Ryan. Dover fought back to score another try, followed shortly by an SAS try from Zach Smith with a final score of 2-2.

The 2nd game was against visitors Westcombe Park. They proved to be tough opposition with both teams trying hard to keep the other at bay. Westcombe Park was the first to score with a great try. SAS came back with a fantastic try from George Moorecroft who took a great opportunity straight from the scrum. Westcombe Park the scored again and it seemed as though SAS had lost the advantage when Smith scored a last minute try to equalise with a 2-2 final score.

Bromley and Dartford

Sheppey and Sittingbourne (SAS) had a fantastic day at Bromley on Sunday winning all three of their games against Bromley A team, Bromley B team and Dartfordians. The first game against Bromley B team got off to an exciting start with great defending from both teams. SAS held a great defensive line and Ben Kindred soon scored a try. Some fantastic tackling was observed from Joseph Ryan who never hesitates to get stuck in and Edmond Shepherd who prevented the other team breaking through on many occasion. Bromley managed to pull one back, but SAS retorted by a try from Zach Smith. Rhys Bishop and new player Adley Keen showed great defence and Smith managed to score another try before the final whistle with a 2-1 victory to SAS.

The 2nd game was played against Dartfordians. A well organised SAS started as they meant to go on and Zach Smith was passed the ball to score a fantastic try almost running the length of the pitch. Oliver Sturrock and George Moorecroft showed great tackling skills and determination in preventing the Dartfordians scoring.Kieran White and Ryan then fought for the ball to pass to Smith who then went on to score another try. With Dartfordians defence in tatters, SAS worked well as a team to enable a speedy Smith to score another 3 tries with a brilliant final score of 5-0 to SAS.

The 3rd and final game was played against Bromley’s A team. They proved to be worthy opponents and a tired SAS had to fight hard to defend their try line. Daniel Smyth showed great defending along with Kindred who held Bromley back from scoring. Bromley then made a fatal error in dropping the ball and Rhys Bishop quickly took the opportunity grabbing the ball and taking it over the line leading to a 1-0 victory for SAS.

Also during the course of the morning all teams attending had some valuable coaching sessions learning new skills. Joseph Ryan was announced Man of the match and Best Tackling went to Edmond Shepherd. Attached photos show the Under 9’s defensive line and team photo with coaches Dave Leaton and George Catlin.

3rd East Kent Tournament, Whitstable

Sheppey and Sittingbourne combined Under 9’s Rugby team got off to a shaky start against Ashford Sharks this Sunday. Despite great tackles from Ben Kindred, Alfie Collins and Adley Keen, they suffered a 4-1 defeat.

The SAS team picked up their game for the 2nd match against Ashford Rhinos. They started strong and were soon in the lead with a great try from Ben Kindred shortly followed by another great try form Zach Smith. Joseph Ryan showed his great tackling skills backed up by Rhys Bishop and Daniel Smyth. Kindred, Smith, Bishop and Oliver Sturrock all scored a further well earned try each smashing through Ashford Rhinos to a 6-0 victory.

The 3rd match was played against Canterbury who started with good defence. SAS soon broke through with a cracking try from Kindred. Keen and Preston supported Ryan with good defence and tackling to enable Smith to score a further 2 tries with Canterbury’s defence in disarray. Bishop finished off with a 4th try leaving a final score of 4-0 to SAS!

The fourth game was against Dover who have proved difficult to beat in the past. SAS organised themselves quickly to form a good defence and put their new found tackling skills into play. Moorecroft and Shepherd showed good defence to stop Dover scoring and Smith soon broke through to score a try. Dover pulled 1 back but with all boys feeling the strain SAS went on to score a further 3 tries (Smith 2, Bishop1), with a final score of 4-1 to SAS.

The team were well placed in the play offs to meet Canterbury for 2nd place. A re-kindled Canterbury started off strong and soon scored a try. The game developed to an exciting pace with both teams putting up a fierce defence. Keen helped SAS push through to enable Smith to score. After good tackling and scrums on both sides a further try was scored by White for SAS. Canterbury fought hard and were rewarded with 2 further tries making a final score of 3-2 to Canterbury.

A tired team had put in a valiant effort throughout the day and coaches Dave Leaton and George Catlin were proud of their performance. The trophy for Best Tackling was won by Joseph Ryan and man of the match was awarded to Ben Kindred.
