Sunday 3 April 2011 - Kent Cup Final
Sittingbourne 21 - Canterbury 22
Sittingbourne travelled
to Aylesford to meet Canterbury in the Kent Cup Final, and we
got a game of two halves!!! From the kick off Bourne put Canterbury
under pressure in every facet of the game and this led to Canterbury
conceding a penalty just outside the 22 and to the left of the
posts, But as all season Ford stepped up and slotted home the
first points of the game. From the restart Bourne again pressured
the Canterbury defence and with quick ball fed wide for Shangobiyi
to score in the corner. Canterbury seemed to wake up after this
score and had some phases of their own before kicking it away
to Williams who in turn put a high ball up and after a few bounces
it was Jenkins who like any good open side would, scooped the
ball up to score under the posts with a conversion from Ford.
With the half time whistle rapidly approaching Bourne showed some
great defence to hold Canterbury up over the line on a couple
of occasions. Bourne were able to kick clear and with some great
discipline at the rucks were able to turn the ball over. With
Canterbury being starved of any quick ball it was them who showed
indiscipline at a ruck in front of the posts and Ford duly obliged
with another 3 points making the half time score 18–0.
With more of the
same asked for by the coaching team for the second half, Bourne
began nervous and started to take the wrong option and gave the
ball away needlessly. This saw Canterbury begin their fight back
with a good jinking run by the Canterbury centre who scored under
the posts to make the score 18 – 7. Canterbury now had their
tails up and with a harsh sin-binning of a Bourne player Canterbury
made the extra man tell again scoring a converted try 18–14.
From the restart Canterbury again showed some quick hands out
wide to score in the corner and take the lead for the first time
in the match 18–19. Bourne had now had to dig deep and find
the form they showed in the first half, and they did, with some
strong rucking by the forwards earning a penalty just to the left
of the posts and again Ford duly obliged kicking Bourne into a
2 point lead 21 – 19. From the kick off Canterbury threw
everything at Bourne and a moment's lapse in discipline saw Bourne
give away a kickable penalty and the Canterbury kicker calmly
stepped up and slotted them to a 22 -21 victory.
The coaching staff would like to say what a game, what a season
and what a squad. We as are the parents are very proud of your
achievements this season. Also a big thank you to all the parents
and the spectators who have showed their continued support all
season. Thank you.
Sunday 27 March 2011 - East Kent Cup Final
Sittingbourne 38 v Medway 5
Sittingbourne welcomed Medway to the Grove
for their long awaited East Kent Cup final and where looking to
improve on an already near impeccable season. Bourne looking to
carry on their great performance from the previous week had to
deal with the larger Medway pack who were trying to make inroads
through the defence and were having limited success beating the
first man and making yards but Bourne managed to ride the initial
pressure from Medway. The Medway backs who were getting good ball
from their pack had decided on the aerial route and repeatedly
kicked over the upcoming defence. One such kick fell to Full Back
Harry Williams who had spotted some space and started to open
his legs down the left wing. Medway had seemed to extinguish the
treat with a good cover defence only for a neat chip and chase
to bounce back perfectly into Williams hands for him to go under
the posts untouched. Brad Ford converted. Bourne were really settling
to the game plan with the forwards playing well and winning good
clean ball for the backs to exploit the space and it was from
one such that the next try with Toby scoring in the from some
clinical handling, Ford converting. Bourne where really starting
to mount the pressure and using all of the firepower to attack
the slowing Medway defence. The next try fell to Michael Gozo
who scored another well worked try out wide. Medway where really
starting to crack under the relentless pressure of the Bourne
team and the tackles where being missed and the next try was the
turn of the forwards and following and great break and hands from
Ben Teeder to put Charlie ‘Boi’ Smith in for a well
taken try. Ford converted leaving Sittingbourne taking a 26 point
lead into half time.
Medway started strongly following the break and where close on
a number of occasions to scoring but the character of the Bourne
side was really beginning to show with some stout defending and
clearances. Bourne made some refreshing changes and the side where
all gelling well with some good performances being displayed.
The winning streak was being continued with Bacon scoring great
individual effort from a Ryan ‘Diet Coke’ Jenkins
turn over and Ford again converting. The final Bourne try fell
to Ben Driscoll who round off and great individual and squad performance.
Medway scored a try in the dying seconds of the game and showed
good commitment playing right to the whistle.
Overall and great squad performance with every member playing
their part in the game and a much needed building block for next
season where Sittingbourne will be looking to add to winning the
League and East Kent Cup with a treble clean sweep of trophies
by taking the Kent Cup.

Kent Cup
Sittingbourne 12 - Tunbridge Wells 9
Sittingbourne under 17s visited Ashford on Sunday having qualified
for the main Kent Cup quater final. Weather conditions were dry
with little wind, perfect for running rugby. Sittingbourne's quarter
final opponents were Tunbridge Wells a very experienced side requiring
Sittingbourne be bring their A game. However, Sittingbourne put
themselves under pressure by giving a string of penalties away
and were fortunate, with the Tunbridge kicker only converting
one of the three penalty opportunities, to be just 3-0 down at
half time. Sittingbourne started the second half playing much
improved rugby looking after the ball and eventually the pressure
told with Thompson-Stringer crossing the line for the Sittingbourne
first points. With the score at 5-3 Tunbridge gained some good
terriorial advantage but it was two dubious refereeing decisions
that gave Tunbridge two penaties which were both converted. With
only two minutes left Sittingbourne were awarded a scrum just
inside the Tunbridge half, the forwards, who scrummed well all
day, secured a great platform for the backs. Sittingbourne fly
half, Ford, called a set piece move which saw full back, Williams,
cross the gain line and following some great handling saw Huntley
cross the line for Sittingbourne's second try converted by Ford
to give Sittngbourne a 12-9 victory over a very good Tunbridge
Wells team.
Sittingbourne 9 - Beccehamians 8
This put Sittingbourne into the Semi Final against Beccahamians,
the only team to have beaten Sittingbourne this season, beating
Sittingbourne easily when they met in the QF stages of the League
Cup competetion. However, the boys looked determined to avenge
this loss as they took to the field and started the game well
controlling possession well and gaining good territory. This field
position maintained by great forward play from every member of
the pack resulted in Beccs giving away penalties with Ford converting
two of these prior to half time with Beccs converting one giving
a half time lead of 6-3. With everything to play for Sittingbourne
took to the field for the second half with new belief in themselves
and continued as the first half left off. However, everytime the
Beccs back line got the ball they looked dangerous particularly
outwide and eventually their pressure told with and unconverted
try to give them a two point lead with only a few minutes remaining.
From the restart Sittngbourne chase putting great pressure on
Beccs and were awarding a penalty 10 metres to the left of the
posts half way between the 22 and 10 metre line, Ford stepped
forward with the whole Sittingbourne support holding their breath
and with the calm assurance he has showed throught this season
slotted the ball through the posts to give Sittingbourne a 9-8
lead. The final minutes saw Sittingbourne desperately defending
their lead and in part due to Beccs handling errors and a forward
pass in the last passage of play took the finest win of their
season to take them into the Final of the Kent Cup, well deserved
from a squad who's team spirit and willingness to play for each
other is second to none. The final will be played on the 3rd of
April at Aylesford. Sittingbourne's next game is the final of
the East Kent Cup to be held at the Grove next Sunday 11.00 kick
off.
Sunday 6 March 2011
Bromley 12 - Sittingbourne 17
Bourne took early control at the rucks, lineouts
and scrums and took the lead from a line-out when Captain Huntley
set up the forwards after a good take and they drove the Bromley
pack over their own line for Russon to score. Ford converted.
In the second half, Bromley upped their game
and scored an unconverted try in the corner. Jenkins won the ball
from the opposition and earned a penalty in front of the posts
which Ford converted. From the kick-off Nightingale picked up
and scored under the posts with Ford converting. With 10 minutes
to go, Bromley threw everything at Sittingbournewho conceded a
penalty. After a quick tap-and-go Bromley crossed the line for
the final score of the game.
Sunday 13 February 2011
Whitstable 0 Sittingbourne 45
Looking to make up for their disappointing performance
from the previous week, Sittingbourne showed great “bounceback-ability”.
They soon opened the scoring when Josh
Bacon capitalised on a well-organised move and Harry Williams
stepped his way through the Whitstable defence for the second.
Toby Shangyobi scored the next try after some fancy footwork and
very good link play through the rest of the back line. The backs
continued to pressurise and Josh Bacon finished off another sizzling
move in the corner. Brad Ford converted three of the four tries
to make it 26-0 at halftime.
Bourne made some changes
at the turnaround and started the second half positively with
the new additions all playing well. Chris Tanner and Japhet Goodburn
stopped Whitstable keeping the ball for any length of time and
the next try came when dummy running made a huge hole which Williams
was only too happy to exploit for his second try. The forwards
continued their dominance and good linking play with the backs
gave Shangyobi his second try in the corner. A great pickup and
drive by Charlie “The Power” Heathfield was well rucked
by the pack, producing very quick ball for Shangyobi to run in
his third of the match. Ford added more conversions and sealed
an entertaining anddetermined performance from the whole squad.
Sunday 30 January 2011
Sittingbourne 15 Tonbridge Juddians 3
Sittingbourne played host to League One Tonbridge
Juddians on Sunday in cold but dry weather conditions for the
first round of the Kent Cup. Sittingbourne fielded an experienced
team and from the opening whistle it was clear it was going to
be a keenly contested game. However, Sittingbourne gradually started
to gain a terriorial advantage with great rucking from the forwards
and got close to the TJs' line on a number of occasions. Following
the sustained pressure SIttingbourne must have been disappointed
to go into the half time break 3-3 with penalties having been
exchanged, Brad Ford converting SIttingbourne's opportunity.
As the second half opened Sittingbourne again
put pressure on TJs. Ffollowing their full back's clearance Harry
Williams cut through their defensive line and, collecting his
own kick through, crossed the line for a great individual effort
which was well converted by Ford. TJs came back into the game
and on a number of occasions put pressure on the hosts but with
solid defence Bourne kept them out. With only five minutes remaining
Sittngbourne were awarded a lineout 10 metres from TJs line. With
a fine throw in from Russon and take from Huntley the pack drove
the resulting maul forward with great control and it was Ben Teeder
that came up with the ball to take Sittingbourne into a 15-3 lead
which they held onto to progress to the Quarter Finals.
Another great team performance. Following the
game the lads presented Matt Franklin with a farewell gift thanking
him for his huge contribution to the team over the last two years
as he emigrates to Australia. He will be sorely missed!

Sittingbourne 16 Bromley 8
Sittingbourne U17’s welcomed Bromley to
the Grove for a league decider, and what a decider it was. Both
teams started this fixture unbeaten in the league and both teams
gave all the supporters who turned up a thrilling game.
In the early exchanges Bourne started extremely
strong at the contact and rucking areas, but it was Bromley who
got on the board first with a penalty. It wasn’t long till
Bourne played their way into Bromley’s red zone and Bromley
conceded a penalty from a dominant Bourne ruck. Ford stepped up
to slot the ball over for a well deserved 3 points. Again some
indiscipline by Bromley at the ruck gave Ford the opportunity
to kick Bourne ahead and he duly obliged. With the game ebbing
and flowing with both sides playing some superb rugby, but it
was Bourne who once again showing why they remain unbeaten this
season with some sublime passing from the backs and the ball ending
up in the hands of the Bourne number 7 Jenkins to score in the
corner. This left the half time score in Bourne’s favour
11-3.
With little having to be said by the Bourne
coaching staff apart from more of the same please, that’s
exactly what they did with more superb scrummaging and rucking
by the forwards and some exquisite passing and moves from the
backs, all being orchestrated by Nightingale and Ford. And it
was Nightingale who set up the next score from another steady
Bourne scrum receiving the ball from the workhorse of a captain
Huntley who popped the ball to Nightingale who drew the defence
before offloading for Coleman to score in the corner. Bourne carried
on playing some of their best rugby off the season but were unable
to cross Bromley’s line again. In the dying minutes of the
game Bromley threw everything at Bourne, but they responded with
superb tackling from every player especially Goodburn who put
in some crunching, try-saving tackles. Bromley did manage to crack
Bourne’s defence for the last score of the game, making
the final score 16-8 to the still unbeaten champions Bourne. Well
done lads.

Sidcup 7 - Sittingbourne 59
Sittingbourne under 17’s visited Sidcup
on Sunday in bright but cold conditions, one of three games postponed
from December due to the snow. Sittingbourne fielded an experienced
team, however with skipper Huntley was missing Ford provided a
great game as captain. The opening exchanges where tight with
Sidcup counter rucking well but 7 minutes in Shangobiyi was set
up well following a backs move and scored in the corner. This
early success was followed by a period of end to end rugby with
solid defence from both teams. This was finally broken with a
converted try on the 25 minute mark and was the followed up by
two further tries from Coleman and Williams all three tries well
converted by Ford leaving the half time score 26-0 in favour of
Sittingbourne.
The second half continued as the first had
ended with Sittngbourne well in command and through basic rugby
were now starting to finish their chances well with five further
tries being added by Bacon (2), Franklin, Williams and Coleman
four of these converted by Ford. Whilst all the try scorers this
week came from the backs, the forwards hard work and platform
provided was a real credit to all of them.
Sunday 21 November 2010
Whitstable 6 Sittingbourne 28
Sittingbourne travelled to Faversham to play
Whitstable with a changed team due to unavailabilities. This was
not obvious as the Bourne forwards started very strongly at the
rucks and scrums, although the first half closed at 3-3 with Bourne
missing out sue to basic handling errors and missed overlaps.
After a motivational team talk from the coaches
at half time, the team started the second half much more positively
with Toby Shangobiyi sprinting in to score the opening try. With
Connor Russon having a great debut game at hooker, Bourne's hard
work lead to a penalty which Josh Bacon took quickly and powered
over for the second try. Whitstable gained three points from a
silly infringement but Bourne hit back through Brad Ford and then
a try for the forwards with Ben Teeder touching down. With the
match essentially won, Bourne made some changes which didn't affect
the pace of the game and in the dying minutes Teeder pounced on
a mistake to score his second try which was converted by Charlie
Coleman.
A solid performance with strong rucking and
great determination and a little bit of patience showing through.

Sittingbourne 22 Canterbury 17 (East Kent Cup Semi-Final)
Sittingbourne under 17’s played host to
Canterbury for the semi-final of the East Kent Cup on Sunday in
wet and rainy conditions. Sittingbourne fielded an experienced
team against a Canterbury Team who have won the corresponding
fixture for the three years.
From the opening whistle it was clear it was
going to be a keenly contested game but Sittingbourne had a good
spell of pressure leading to a penalty expertly taken by Brad
Ford. Canterbury came back well and put Sittingbourne under a
great deal of pressure eventually resulting in them crossing the
line for their opening score which was well converted giving them
a 3-7 lead. Sittingbourne narrowed the gap with another penalty.
As the first half drew to an end Sittingbourne again through the
boot of Ford capitalised on Canterbury indiscipline only to concede
a further converted try leaving the score 9-14.
The second half saw Sittingbourne start to gain
some territorial advantage and with penalties exchanged two to
one in favour of Sittingbourne they found themselves just two
points adrift. Canterbury’s continued indiscipline saw a
player being yellow carded and Sittingbourne with a one man advantage.
The game contined to ebb and flow with Sittingbourne starting
to win the rucking contest to take the lead following a defensive
mistake by Canterbury seeing Matt Franklin ground a ball kicked
through which was converted by Ford giving Sittingbourne a 22-17
lead which they defended to the end. Sittingbourne can be rightly
proud of their defensive play throughout the team with particular
praise for an immense forwards display against very strong opposition.

Sittingbourne 33 Medway 10
This was an important clash that might decide
the ultimate destination of the League title this season.
Bourne started the better through hard game-line
tackling and domination of the ruck areas and an early try went
to second row Hayden Stringer from a well-set maul. Medway clearly
needed to get back into the game and threw everything they had
at the home side, but they soaked up th epressure and stopped
the visitors in their tracks. Bourne did conced a penalty but
they were not fazed and following a good restart from fly half
Brad Ford and strong competition in th eairby the pack they went
deep into Medway's half from where they forced a penalty which
was neatly converted by Ford. Centre Matt Frankln scored the next
try, hitting the line at pace and cutting through the back line,
to make the score 16-3 at the interval.
Bourne conceded a converted try through a momentary
lack of concentration at the beginning of the second half, but
then got back into their stride with hard running by centres Franklin
and Josh Bacon and winger Charlie Coleman. It was no surpise when
Josh Bacon went over to extend the advantage. Splendid tactical
kicking from Ford pined Medway back at every opportunity. following
a lineout deep in their half, captain and Man-of-the-Match Dan
Huntley stole possession and sparked off the move which brought
Franklin's second try. Ford converted and the Medway pack's heads
dropped from th econtinual onslaught and superb mauling. Another
well-worked lineoout and try by prop Jacob Smith wrapped it all
up nicely.
Sunday 10 October 2010
Sittingbourne 36 Ashford 12
Sittingbourne started well with a well-worked
try from Harry Williams, but the lead was short-lived as Ashford
broke away to score an unconverted try. Bourne responded with some
superb scrummaging and rucking from the forwards with excellent
work from the tight five. This pressure resulted in tries from Steve
Thelwell, Josh Bacon and Steve Goodhew. Two were converted by Brad
"The Boot" Ford.
The second half carried on in the same vein with
the forwards rucking and scrummaging hard and the whole team tackling
well. Williams scored two more tries including the try of the match
when Ford chipped into the corner for Williams to run onto. Ashford
managed a consolation converted try.

Beckenham 13 Sittingbourne 45
Sittingbourne under 17’s visited Beckenham
on Sunday in very wet conditions to play their first League game
of the season.
Sittingbourne were only able to take 16 players
but found themselves up against a team also struggling for numbers.
From the opening whistle it was clear Sittingbourne were going
to control the game easily and by half time held a 26-6 lead with
tries from Williams (3) and Shangobiyi, three of which were expertly
converted by Ford. The second half was equally one sided with
further trys from Williams, Thompson-Stringer and Shangobiyi with
Ford converting twice. Beckenham scored a late consolation try
leaving the final score 13-45 to the visitors.
